The creator of sword and sorcery, and more.
Robert E. Howard was one of the greatest authors of his time, in his genre. He is considered the creator of the “Sword and Sorcery” genre, which is known foremost through the character Conan. Other great Howard characters are Kull, Solomon Kane and Bran Mak Morn.
Despite his short career – Howards died at age 30 after only 12 years as an author – he wrote over 800 stories and poems. His breakthrough came in the pulp magazine Weird Tales during the 1930s. His stories take us to such different surroundings as the ancient Atlantis, the North-African desert during WWI, secret opium dens in the dark alleys and battlefields in northern Britain during the Roman invasion.
Robert E. Howard’s life was dramatized in the feature film Whole Wide World, in which Howard is portrayed by Vincent D’Onofrio. Renée Zellweger is Novalyne Price, school teacher in Cross Plains, Texas, where Howard lived most of his life. The two had a stormy relationship during two years in the mid-1930s and the film is based on Price’s memoirs One Who Walked Alone.
